The UP is a little boy’s heaven. Everything centers around very manly outdoor activities like fishing, 4 wheeling, catching minnows, shooting off fireworks, boating, and camping.

This is Beckett on his first real fishing trip.  He may appear to be a little overdressed, but you never know when you’re going to have to dive in and catch the fish with your bare hands, now do you?

Driving the Boat with Papa

You don’t have to go far on Little Manistique Lake to find the fish. Beckett’s Great Grandpa Pete sunk a couple of old prams just past the dock sometime in the last 30 years, and created a wonderful little fish habitat right out in front of the house.

Beckett With His First Fish

When he pulled this little guy out of the water, Beckett immediately said, “Too small. Throw him back!” His first time out, and he’s already aiming to catch a big one.  We’re going to have to work on his fishing stories, too. When I asked him how big the fish was he caught when he got home that night, he made a tiny little gesture, like the fish might have actually been to small to even see.  Papa quickly corrected him, and started to teach him that when somebody asks you how big your fish was, you spread your arms out as wide as possible.

Before bed, while I was scratching his back, Beck told me, “I went fishing today, Mommy. And the fish I caught loved me THIS much…”, and he spead his arms out as wide as he could. He was asleep before his arms could even rest back down by his side. Being a Yuper is hard work.
