The Beginning of a New Chapter

The Beginning of a New Chapter, originally uploaded by darnlucky.

Today is a big day. Beckett moved up from the Infant/Toddler program, and started his first day of Primary School! This is the hippie school version of Kindergarten. He’ll be in a class with other 3 year olds, as well as 4 and 5 year old students.

Yesterday afternoon, we went to visit his new classroom to check out all of the exciting new work he’ll be doing, and to meet his new teachers Ms. Ginny and Ms. Erica. Click on the picture above to see the pictures and read about Beckett’s new classroom. It’s pretty awesome.

He woke up this morning VERY excited about going to his new class, and about meeting his new friends. Basil drove him to school, and they encountered their first really big new step in moving up to Primary — The Carpool Lane!

We’ve been stressing pretty hard about the carpool lane because Beckett normally has to be dragged kicking and screaming into school every single morning. My theory is that Basil and I are just the World’s Most Awesome Parent, and hey, who can blame the kid for not EVER EVER wanting to be away from us. Either that, or the hippie school teachers must be secretly beating him with organic egg noodles and forcing him to listen to Joan Biaz records while crafting macrame potholders for single mothers in need.

To our great delight and astonishment, when Ms. Ginny approached the car to help Beckett out at the carpool lane, Beckett gave her a huge smile and a giggle. She asked him, “Are you ready to have the best day ever?”, and off they went hand in hand into the classroom.

Basil came home and put on Leather and Lace by Stevie Nicks, and we danced in his office. We both got a little verclempt. Our little monkey is growing up so fast. And we’ve never been more proud or happier. We’re ready to have the best day ever. Yes, we are.

I’m just sitting down to my desk for the day, and am about to start work. Working second shift, because the company I work for is based out of Honolulu, has it’s ups and downs. On the upside, I get to go back to bed after Beckett is off to school, and I have a few hours to myself each weekday to get things done.

Lately I’ve been sleeping through most of the “getting things done” part of my day. I call those long mornings in bed mini-vacations. But I think in reality, they’re more like mini-fatassifications.

On the downside, I work during the evenings when Beckett and Basil are playing. For the most part, I do try to get in snatches of family time during my work day. Coffee breaks, but without the coffee. And we do sit down to eat dinner together every night. I get to put Beckett to bed, and sometimes I end my day when he falls asleep, while other times I get back to work and stay up really late.

The schedule has the most effect on my relationship with Baz. There isn’t a lot of time for us to veg together, or to go out to dinner, or for a family movie night out. I think we both get disconnected and bored since we don’t have our playmate at the ready whenever we want to play.

Lately, I’ve been missing my 9 to 5. I’ve been missing having dinner out with friends, or being able to leave for the weekend on a Friday night after work. I’ve been missing Atlanta and the people I love there. I’ve been missing my creative life.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m still obsessively busy with creative projects, but none of them have been collaborative, and thus, harder to share.

So, to cure my aching inner artist, I’ve scheduled a unique vacation for Baz and I the last week of November. We’re going to leave Beckett with grandma, and go to the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina.

Basil is going to take a Blacksmithing class. And I’m taking a weaving and chair caning class. We’ll get to spend our days being creative, and our nights on hot dates. Va va va vooooooooom! Sounds like the perfect way to ring in the holidays.

Come on, November. I need ya!

What is Love?

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

Last night I was snuggling on the couch with Beckett before he went to bed, and we were laughing, and tickling each other, and being silly.  I said, “I love you, Beckett.” He said, “I love you, Achoo.” We giggled.

Then I asked him, “Beckett, what is love. What does love mean?”  He answered, “It’s a sign language.”

I laughed and questioned his logic. “A sign language? What do you mean? How is love a sign language?”

And my sweetest little three year old boy in the entire universe leaned over and gave me a soft kiss.  “That’s love.”  And then he put his arms around me, and hugged me, and said, “That’s love.”

“OH! A sign language! I see. I like that!”, I exclaimed proudly.

Then he reached over and honked my nose, and poked me in the eye. “That is NOT love.”

I didn’t want to argue with him, but even when I get honked or poked, smacked, or asked to SCOOT OVER!, when it comes to Beckett it’s all love to me.
